FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do you source the sinker cypress?
Live Edge Woodworks has access to private swamps, land and waters where sinker cypress was felled hundreds of years ago. We utilize our own heavy equipment to carefully remove the logs and return them to our lumber yard where they are dried and cut into slabs for use in our projects.
  • How old is sinker cypress?
Most sinker cypress is hundreds, if not thousands of years old. We tell our clients that it's like finding dinosaur bones because between the age of the trees and the amount of time they have spent under water, you will never--in our lifetime--find wood of such beauty and strength.
  • What does "live edge" mean?"
Sinker Cypress logs are not perfectly round. Their beauty lies in the edges of the wood itself. Live edge refers to the natural shape of the log, and by proxy, the slabs that are created from it. Each slab will have a unique edge--like a fingerprint--that is reminiscent of the shape the tree held as it soared toward the sky. The water acted as a preservative and rather than decay, the tree held its form and that edge is captured in the slabs and furniture we create today.
  • What types of furniture do you make?
Most of our customers come to Live Edge Woodworks for large tables--conference rooms, dining tables or corporate use in hotels and bars. However, we are merely craftsmen to the piece of your dreams. We have crafted end and coffee tables, Big Green Egg stands, trophy and hunting stands, and unique slabs that some use as art installations. For the interior designer and architecture community, we also produce custom desks and tables for their offices and their clients.
  • Can you make a table of any size?
We have the ability to cut lumber up to 60" wide and the length can be determined by your space.
  • Can I stain the wood?
Yes, we have a variety of stain colors you may choose from.
  • What are my leg choices for tables?
We contract with an iron works artisan to craft the table legs of your choice, or if you would prefer wooden legs, we have several options for you to select from. We can determine you choices during the slab selection process.
  • How do you select which slab of lumber to use for your project?
Choosing a slab of sinker cypress is like selecting a diamond. It is chosen for its color and quality. The hues of a slab range from golden to ruddy brown, depending on the log itself. And because of it's live edge, we select a slab that will accomodate the needs of your project. Some of our clients prefer to choose the slab themselves, and are welcome to come to our shop where we will walk them through our inventory. Others prefer us to select it for them. Ultimately, the quality of the slab will partially determine the price of the project.
  • How do I place an order?
You may call us or email to discuss your project. Once we have determined the type of furniture you'd like to build, you may come to our shop to select your slab, or we are happy to select it on your behalf in respect to your budget. We require 50% deposit in order to begin a project. The remaining 50% is due upon delivery. (For larger projects, depending on their complexity, this amount could increase.)
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash or check. We require 50% deposit in order to begin a project. The remaining 50% is due upon delivery. (For larger projects, depending on their complexity, this amount could increase.)
  • Do you deliver or ship?
We will deliver your order within 100 miles of Breaux Bridge, LA for a flat fee of $100. Any orders outside of that radius will be shipped via FedEx Ground or Freight, depending on the order size and weight. The customer is responsible for all shipping costs and insurance.
  • How do I care for and clean my furniture?
The best solution is always nature's solution. We recommend a 2:1 water/vinegar solution to maintain the quality of your wood.
